Wanhuida sponsors 1st CTA debate competition

In the morning of 8th March, 2019, the "Wanhuida Cup" 1st CTA National University Trademark Hot Issues Debate Competition, which is hosted by the China Trademark Association (CTA), jointly organised by Beijing Justra Intellectual Property Center (Justra), Wanhuida and the School of Law of Beijing Technology and Business University (BTBU), is launched in Beijing.

CTA President Ma Fu, Justra Vice President Cao Zhongqiang, Wanhuida Founding Partner Bai Gang, Secretary of BTBU Law School Wen Siying and Judge representative of the debate competition, Professor Li Shunde of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences are present. The launching ceremony is moderated by Justra Director Dr. Wang Ze.

Ma Fu and Bai Gang draw lots for the 16 competing teams, which divides them into two sides. The pro sides include debate teams of Southwest University of Political Science & Law, SUN YAT-SEN University, China University of Political Science and Law, Peking University, Beijing Technology and Business University, East China University of Political Science and Law, Xiangtan University and Chongqing University of Technology. The con sides include debate teams of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Northwest University of Political Science and Law, Central University of Finance and Economics, Zhejiang Gongshang University, Renmin University of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai University and Tsinghua University.

The 16 competing teams are split into 4 groups to debate over four topics, which are chosen by Professor Li Shunde through lots drawing.

On Saturday 30 March, 2019, the preliminary contest is held at the BTBU campus, which eliminates the number of competing teams to eight. After the quarter-final on 20 April and the ensuing semi-final on 11 May, the competing teams are narrowed down to Southwest University of Political Science & Law and the Renmin University. The China University of Political Science and Law and Chongqing University of Technology tie for the second runner-up. Dr. Huang Hui, the firm’s Senior Partner serves as judge at the contests.

On 7 July, as part of the CTF event, the final contest is held in Yinchuan. The teams debate over the topic “Does the trademark attached to the OEM products (purely for export) constitute trademark use?”

Zhang Xiaojin, Presiding Judge, Second Tribunal, Beijing Intellectual Property Court, Xue Yinjun, Section Chief, Fifth Examination Division, Trademark Office, CNIPA, Professor Zhang Weijun, Dean of Research Center of IP Law and Competition Law in Tongji University, Zhou Duo, Senior Counsel, COFCO, as well as Ren Sheying, Associate Director, 3rd Interview Division, Economic Daily serve as the judges at the final contest. Zhang Long, Associate Professor, School of Law, Beijing Technology and Business University serves as the President of the debate.

The Renmin University wins the championship and the Southwest University of Political Science & Law the runner-up.
