On September 15, 2026, under the auspices of the Haidian District Administration for Market Regulation (Haidian District Intellectual Property Administration), the Sino-US-Germany-Japan Patent Practice Symposium, which is jointly organized by the Capital Intellectual Property Services Association (CIPSA) and Beijing (ZGC) International Intellectual Property Service Hall, is held in Beijing.
The Symposium provides a platform for veteran practitioners from the four jurisdictions to share insights on patent examination, prosecution, litigation and dispute resolution practice, which in turn helps equip the Chinese businesses with the local knowledge and knowhow in their assertion of intellectual property rights and mitigation of potential risks in the oversea markets.
Okayama Taichiro, Director of Intellectual Property Department, Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) Beijing Office, kicks off the Symposium with a keynote speech on “Prosecuting Invention Patent in Japan”. Mr. Okayama prepares the floor with a statistical analysis on the invention patent prosecution status quo in Japan, followed with the latest update on JPO practice in prioritized examination, PPH, AI examination, foreign language application and correction of translation errors, as well as face-to-face examination, providing practical tips to potential applicants seeking to secure patent rights in Japan.

Qin Xiaotao, Patent Counsel, Wanhuida Intellectual Property, speaks on “Procedural Practice on Chinese Patent Applications Entering US”. Ms. Qin gives the audience a systematic introduction over the pitfalls and key takeaways on Chinese patent applications entering the US, covering an array of topics like the potential routes, eligibility requirement, checklist of filing documents, information disclosure statement, examination flow chart, and key timelines. She cautions that applicants should act in good faith in filing patent applications and fulfill the disclosure obligation, as failure to do so could lead to invalidation of the patent or charges of patent fraud.

Jeffrey E. Danley, Partner, Seed IP, speaks on “U.S. Patent Litigation”. Mr. Danley parses the factors contributing to the pricy litigation in the US and compares the pros and cons of initiating proceedings before the US district courts, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of USPTO, as well as the US International Trade Commission (ITC). He advises Chinese businesses to “Think Strategically, Not Reactively” in responding to patent litigation in the US, and to mitigate litigation risks by “carve-out of US operations and “smart use of AI”.

Maximilan J. Weiss, Partner, and Dr. David Kuttenkeuler, Partner & a Co-founder, SKM-IP, share insights on “Patent Prosecution & Litigation in Europe: Strategic and Practical Guidance”. The gentlemen offer the audience an in-depth and insider view of the European patent prosecution landscape, the drafting techniques, filing strategies and costs, the Unified Patent Court (UPC) proceeding 101 from a Chinese perspective, as well as the EPO Oppositions and nullity actions. Their presentation addresses a slew of hot-button issues including long-arm jurisdiction, SEP, FRAND and anti-suit injunctions, offering proactive strategy and concrete approaches to mitigate risks in the European market.

The Symposium is moderated by Daniel Jiang, Partner, Wanhuida. The firm’s Partners He Shanmei and Wang Rui are also present. Wanhuida Law Firm, an affiliate of Wanhuida Intellectual Property co-sponsors the event.
